Long Island marriage license basics
Requirements, appointments and office hours can change. Confirm details with the clerk you plan to use. This overview is practical planning information, not legal advice.
For a marriage anywhere in New York State outside New York City, a couple generally applies in person with a town or city clerk. New York State currently says a license is issued immediately, the ceremony ordinarily cannot take place during the first 24 hours, and the license is valid for 60 calendar days beginning the day after it is issued. The state fee outside New York City is currently $40.
On Long Island, licenses are handled locally—not by the Nassau or Suffolk County Clerk. Nassau County directs couples to the appropriate town, city or participating village clerk. Suffolk County likewise directs couples to its town clerks or registrars.
Bring the original license to the ceremony and follow the issuing clerk’s instructions. After the ceremony, the officiant and witnesses complete the appropriate sections. New York State says the officiant must return the completed original to the town or city clerk that issued it within five days.
